Area of Science:

  • Occupational health
  • Psychometrics
  • Rehabilitation medicine

Background:

  • Work disability poses significant challenges for individuals and society.
  • Accurate assessment of functional capacity is crucial for effective rehabilitation and return-to-work strategies.
  • Existing assessment tools may not fully capture the multifaceted nature of work disability, encompassing both physical and behavioral health aspects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and psychometric properties of the newly developed Work Disability Functional Assessment Battery (WD-FAB).
  • To assess the reliability, validity, and efficiency of WD-FAB scales for measuring physical function (PF) and behavioral health (BH) domains.
  • To determine the suitability of WD-FAB for use in populations experiencing work disability.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 973 adults unable to work due to physical or mental disabilities.
  • Participants completed relevant WD-FAB scales alongside established measures of validity.
  • Data quality, computerized adaptive testing (CAT) efficiency, person fit, and construct validity (convergent and discriminant correlations) were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • The WD-FAB scales demonstrated good data quality and high CAT efficiency across both PF and BH domains.
  • Measurement accuracy was very good for PF scales, with some variability noted for BH scales.
  • Construct validity was supported, with correlations between WD-FAB scales and established measures aligning with expectations.

Conclusions:

  • The WD-FAB exhibits strong psychometric properties, including good data quality, CAT efficiency, and construct validity, supporting its use in assessing PF and BH function related to work disability.
  • While generally well-supported, variations in scale performance indicate a need for future item refinement, particularly for the Self-Efficacy scale.
  • The findings suggest the WD-FAB is a promising tool for evaluating work disability and guiding interventions.
