Surveys02:16

Surveys

17.3K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

14.4K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

    Summary

Training speech-language pathologists on the Cleft Audit Protocol for Speech-Augmented (CAPS-A) improved interrater reliability. While not all parameters improved uniformly, key velopharyngeal function measures achieved acceptable reliability.

    Area of Science:

    • Speech-language pathology
    • Clinical assessment reliability

    Background:

    • Interrater reliability is crucial for consistent clinical assessments.
    • The Cleft Audit Protocol for Speech-Augmented (CAPS-A) is used to evaluate speech in children with cleft palate.
    • Standardized training may enhance the reliability of speech assessments.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the impact of training on interrater reliability using the CAPS-A.
    • To compare reliability scores between two studies using different versions of the CAPS-A.
    • To assess the effect of training on speech-language pathologists' scoring consistency.

    Main Methods:

    • Two studies were conducted involving speech-language pathologists assessing English-speaking children.
    • Study 1 assessed interrater and intrarater reliability of the CAPS-A before and after training.
    • Study 2 assessed reliability of a modified CAPS-A (CAPS-A Americleft Modification).

    Main Results:

    • Interrater reliability scores improved for 6 of 13 parameters after CAPS-A training in Study 1.
    • Study 2 showed lower kappa scores than Study 1, potentially due to statistical artifacts.
    • Percent agreement scores indicated similar reliability across both studies when kappa limitations were considered.

    Conclusions:

    • Systematic training can improve interrater reliability for speech assessments.
    • Improvements in reliability may not be consistent across all assessment parameters.
    • Acceptable reliability was achieved for critical parameters evaluating velopharyngeal function.
