Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of experimentally induced hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism on pituitary ACTH and adrenal corticosterone levels in adult male rats.
  • To elucidate the direct effects of thyroid hormone status on pituitary ACTH content and secretion.

Main Methods:

  • Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with 6-Propylthiouracil (PTU) to induce hypothyroidism or L-Thyroxine (T4) to induce hyperthyroidism.
  • Plasma levels of T4, T3, TSH, ACTH, and corticosterone were measured.
  • Pituitary glands were incubated to assess ACTH and TSH content and secretion.

Main Results:

  • Hyperthyroid rats (T4-treated) exhibited significantly increased plasma ACTH and corticosterone levels compared to controls.
