Photoluminescence: Applications

1.3K
Photoluminescence offers a wide range of applications due to its inherent sensitivity and selectivity. This technique allows for both direct and indirect analyses of the analyte. Direct quantitative analysis is possible when the analyte exhibits a favorable quantum yield for fluorescence or phosphorescence. However, an indirect analysis may be feasible if the analyte is not fluorescent or phosphorescent, or if the quantum yield is unfavorable. Indirect methods include reacting the analyte with...

Photoluminescence: Fluorescence and Phosphorescence

6.5K
Photoluminescence is a process where a molecule absorbs light energy and re-emits it in the form of light. This phenomenon occurs when a substance absorbs photons, promoting its electrons to higher energy level excited states, followed by a relaxation process in which the electrons return to their original ground state energy levels and emit light. Photoluminescence is widely observed in various materials, including semiconductors, and organic and inorganic compounds.

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Solid-State Chemistry
  • Luminescence

Background:

  • Development of novel phosphors for efficient white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is crucial for solid-state lighting.
  • Europium-activated (Eu(2+)) materials are widely studied for their luminescent properties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize and characterize a novel reddish-orange-emitting thiosilicate phosphor, BaLa2Si2S8:Eu(2+).
  • To evaluate its photoluminescent properties, including excitation and emission spectra, quantum efficiency, and thermal stability.
  • To assess its potential application in white LEDs by combining it with other phosphors.

Main Methods:

  • Synthesis of BaLa2Si2S8:Eu(2+) in a sealed fused silica ampule.
  • Crystal structure refinement using Rietveld methods.
  • Photoluminescence spectroscopy to determine excitation/emission spectra and quantum efficiency.
  • Thermal luminescence quenching measurements.
  • Fabrication of a white LED by combining the phosphor with commercial blue and green phosphors and a near-UV LED chip.

Main Results:

  • A novel reddish-orange-emitting BaLa2Si2S8:Eu(2+) thiosilicate phosphor was successfully prepared.
  • The phosphor exhibits broad excitation from UV to blue (350-450 nm) and a reddish-orange emission peaking at 645 nm.
  • A quantum efficiency of approximately 24% was achieved, with moderate thermal luminescence quenching up to 150 °C.
  • A white light with a high color rendering index (Ra) of approximately 94 was obtained when integrated into a white LED device.

Conclusions:

  • BaLa2Si2S8:Eu(2+) is a promising reddish-orange-emitting phosphor for white LED applications.
  • Its broad excitation range and good quantum efficiency contribute to high-quality white light generation.
  • The developed white LED demonstrates excellent color rendering properties, suitable for various lighting applications.
