Summary

Uveitis affects 0.52% of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, often presenting with panuveitis or intermediate uveitis. Prompt assessment and surgical interventions may be necessary to improve visual function in affected eyes.

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disease of the central nervous system.
  • Ocular manifestations, including uveitis, can occur in MS patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency, subtype, complications, treatment, and visual prognosis of uveitis in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of medical records for 1702 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients was conducted.
  • Patients were assessed by both neurologists and ophthalmologists for a history of uveitis.

Main Results:

  • Nine MS patients (0.52%) were diagnosed with uveitis, predominantly panuveitis and intermediate uveitis.
  • Common complications included cataract and glaucoma, often requiring surgical treatment.
  • Visual acuity in affected eyes ranged widely, with 11 of 16 eyes achieving better than 20/40 after treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Uveitis should be considered in MS patients presenting with visual loss.
  • Surgical interventions may be required to improve visual function, especially when posterior segment complications arise.
