Abstract:
The foregoing review by J. T. Greenamyre and A. B. Young provides an excellent discussion of the alterations in excitatory amino acid transmitter systems that accompany Alzheimer's disease, and the interesting possibility that excitotoxicity may participate in disease pathogenesis. I would add a speculation that non-NMDA receptors may be particularly important in mediating such excitotoxicity.
