To systematically review existing data on hypertension prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control in Egypt.
To identify potential strategies for enhancing hypertension control and improving patient quality of life.

Main Methods:

A systematic review of six databases (PubMed, Cochrane, MEDLINE, Sciencedirect, MedEase, Embase) was conducted.

Hydra, a Computer-Based Platform for Aiding Clinicians in Cardiovascular Analysis and Diagnosis

Studies published in English between January 1995 and November 2013, involving human subjects, were included.

A total of 21 studies met the inclusion criteria.

Main Results:

The review included 21 studies with sample sizes ranging from 27 to 12,008 participants, aged 6 to 95 years.
All studies included both male and female participants, with women constituting the majority in most studies.
A decline in hypertension awareness and even lower levels of control were observed across the studies.

Conclusions:

Significant declines in hypertension awareness and control levels were identified in Egypt.
Further research is essential to understand the underlying reasons for low control and treatment rates.
Evidence-based policies are needed to improve the quality of life for hypertensive patients in Egypt.
