Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Sexual Health
  • Quality of Life

Background:

  • Over 1 million total hip replacements (THRs) are performed annually worldwide.
  • Improved quality of life (QoL), including sexual function, is a key goal for THR patients.
  • The impact of THR on sexual functioning and provider communication regarding sexuality is under-researched.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review existing literature on sexuality and sexual function in patients before and after total hip replacement (THR).

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and PEDro databases.
  • The search included terms related to sexual function and THR without date limitations until December 2013.

Main Results:

  • THR demonstrates positive effects on sexual satisfaction and performance in patients with end-stage hip osteoarthritis.
  • While research exists on hip range of motion for sexual activity, validated guidelines and risk discussions are lacking.
  • Sexual activity is an important QoL consideration for THR patients, yet it is infrequently addressed by medical staff.

Conclusions:

  • Physical and psychosocial factors, including comfortable movement, significantly influence sexual functioning post-THR.
  • Healthcare providers should proactively discuss sexual concerns and provide counseling on physical and functional aspects of sexual activity.
  • Rehabilitation programs focusing on activities of daily living, including sexual activity, should incorporate counseling, therapeutic exercise, and advice on sexual positions to enhance sexual health.
