Abstract

Insights

This study analyzed Multiple Sclerosis (MS) cases in Prishtina from 2003-2012, finding a prevalence of 19.6/100,000 and a female-to-male ratio of 2.3:1. Most patients were diagnosed with Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS).

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, relapsing neurological disease impacting the Central Nervous System.
  • Understanding its epidemiological factors is crucial for disease management and public health strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence, prevalence, and mortality rates of MS in Prishtina.
  • To analyze demographic and clinical characteristics, including disease phases (RRMS, SPMS, PPMS), gender, age, and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores.

Main Methods:

  • A clinical and epidemiological-descriptive study was conducted.
  • Data were collected from 412 diagnosed MS patients at the Clinic of Neurology in Prishtina (2003-2012) via questionnaires and medical records.
  • Statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Office Excel.

Main Results:

  • MS prevalence was 19.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, with an incidence of 0.95 and mortality of 0.14 per 100,000.
  • The female-to-male ratio was 2.3:1, and the most affected age group was 30-39 years.
  • The primary clinical form was Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS) at 72.3%, followed by Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS) at 22.6% and Primary Progressive MS (PPMS) at 5.1%.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides key epidemiological data for MS in the studied region.
  • Findings highlight a higher prevalence in females and the predominant RRMS form, informing clinical practice and resource allocation.
