Laparoscopic treatment of intussusception

Background:

• Laparoscopic surgery is increasingly successful in pediatric cases.

Purpose of the Study:

• To evaluate the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic reduction of intestinal intussusception in young children.
• To present a case series and video of the laparoscopic technique.

• Retrospective analysis of 4 patients undergoing laparoscopic reduction of intestinal intussusception (August 2008 - April 2013).
• Detailed review of each case, including video analysis of the laparoscopic technique in one patient.

• Four pediatric patients (2 boys, mean age 9 months) underwent successful laparoscopic reduction.
• Mean operative time was 35 minutes with no conversions or complications.
• Patients were discharged after a mean of 2.5 days.

Conclusions:

• Laparoscopic reduction of intussusception is a safe procedure for young children with uncomplicated cases.
• The technique is effective and well-tolerated, with rapid recovery.
