Summary

Biopsying multiple liver lobes in dogs increases the accuracy of diagnosing liver disease. This study found that examining several liver lobes improves the identification of the predominant histopathologic abnormality.

  • Liver biopsy is crucial for diagnosing organ-wide disease, but inferences are made from small samples.
  • Current recommendations for canine liver biopsy often involve multiple lobes, yet lobe-to-lobe consistency is unestablished.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the distribution of histopathologic abnormalities across different liver lobes in dogs.
  • To test the hypothesis that discordant histopathologic findings are evenly distributed among liver lobes.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving necropsy of seventy dogs.
  • Histopathologic evaluation of liver samples collected from all lobes of each dog.
  • Assignment of a primary diagnosis based on the predominant abnormality in each liver sample.
