Insights
Children with chronic pyelonephritis often develop sensorineural hearing loss. Early diagnosis involves identifying high-frequency hearing threshold changes, linked to disease severity and duration.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Otolaryngology
- Nephrology
Context:
- Chronic pyelonephritis is a significant pediatric health concern.
- Hearing impairment can impact a child's development and quality of life.
- Early detection of comorbidities in chronic conditions is crucial.
Purpose:
- To establish criteria for the early diagnosis of hearing disorders in children with chronic pyelonephritis.
- To identify specific audiological markers associated with this patient group.
- To integrate diagnostic criteria into routine examinations for pyelonephritis patients.
Summary:
- The study analyzed 100 children with chronic pyelonephritis, finding 37% had sensorineural hearing loss.
- Early signs included elevated acoustic sensitivity thresholds at high frequencies (6,000-8,000 Hz).
- Hearing loss severity correlated with the duration and severity of chronic pyelonephritis.
Impact:
- Developed and recommended criteria for early hearing disorder diagnostics in children with chronic pyelonephritis.
- Highlights the importance of audiological screening in pediatric pyelonephritis management.
- Aims to improve long-term outcomes by enabling timely intervention for hearing loss.
Abstract:
The objective of the present study was to develop the criteria for early diagnostics of hearing disorders in the children presenting with chronic pyelonephritis. The study included 100 children of whom 37 (37%) suffered from the sensorineural hearing loss. The early manifestations of this disorder and the enhancement of the acoustic sensitivity threshold for the high frequencies in the range from 6,000 to 8,000 Hz were documented. The study has demonstrated the dependence of the severity of hearing loss on the duration and severity of chronic pyelonephritis. The criteria for early diagnostics of hearing disorders in the children presenting with chronic pyelonephritis were developed and recommended for the inclusion in the standard examination of the patients with pyelonephritis.
