Background:

Rectal diverticulum is a rare condition in dogs.
It involves the formation of a pouch in the rectal wall.

Observation:

A 12-year-old terrier presented with perineal swelling, dyschezia, and tenesmus.
Rectal examination revealed a fecal sac in the left rectal wall and pelvic diaphragm weakness.
Radiography confirmed a large rectal diverticulum with a wide neck.

Findings:

Surgical diverticulectomy using a lateral approach combined with herniorrhaphy was performed.
The procedure successfully addressed the rectal diverticulum and associated pelvic diaphragm defect.

Implications:

This surgical approach offers an excellent outcome for canine rectal diverticulum.
The case highlights successful long-term management of this rare condition.
