    Background:

    • Barrett's syndrome involves esophageal metaplasia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the diagnostic utility of static scintigraphy for detecting ectopic gastric mucosa.
    • To assess the prevalence of ectopic gastric mucosa in patients with suspected Barrett's syndrome.

    Main Methods:

    • Endoscopic examination was performed on 12 patients.
    • Guided biopsies were taken.
    • Static scintigraphy using 99m-technetium pertechnetate was employed.

    Main Results:

    • Ectopic gastric mucosa was confirmed in 5 out of 12 patients.
    • One patient presented with a Barrett's ulcer.
    • Scintigraphy successfully identified increased radioactivity indicative of ectopic gastric mucosa.

    Conclusions:

    • Static scintigraphy is a reliable method for diagnosing ectopic gastric mucosa in the esophagus.
    • Systematic endoscopic biopsy is crucial for patients with confirmed columnar-cell metaplasia due to malignancy risk.
