    Area of Science:

    • Health Services Research
    • Primary Care Management
    • Medical Practice Administration

    Background:

    • Standardized reporting in general medical practices is not widely established.
    • Variations in practice activity reporting hinder comparative analysis and research.
    • Need for workable indicators to assess and compare general practice performance.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the feasibility of implementing a standardized practice annual report.
    • To evaluate the utility of defined core data for inter-practice comparisons.
    • To explore the impact of standardized data collection on practice income and accuracy.

    Main Methods:

    • Nine general medical practices in the Grampian region participated in a four-month trial.
    • Core data definitions were developed through extensive consultation and discussion.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Practices collected data based on these agreed-upon definitions.
  • Main Results:

    • The defined core data proved to be workable indicators of practice activity.
    • Comparisons between practices became feasible using the collected data.
    • Three practices reported improved form accuracy, leading to increased item of service income.

    Conclusions:

    • Standardized practice annual reporting is feasible and provides valuable comparative data.
    • The study observed smaller variations in practice activity than previously reported.
    • Pooling and collation of defined core data are recommended to stimulate further research.
