Cancer Prevention

8.7K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Preventive Healthcare Services

2.3K
Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Oncology
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Breast cancer screening programs are crucial for early detection and improved survival rates.
  • Assessing program performance is essential for identifying gaps and optimizing resource allocation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the performance indicators of Mexico's early breast cancer detection program.
  • To compare these indicators against national and international standards.

Main Methods:

  • A case study utilizing the 2011 Women Cancer Information System (SICAM) data.
  • Performance indicators for productivity, access, and quality were measured and compared.

Main Results:

  • The program demonstrated insufficient capacity (37%) and low coverage in screening (15%), diagnostic evaluation (16%), biopsy (44%), and treatment (57%).
  • Effectiveness in confirmed cases was very low (0.04% of screening mammograms).
  • SICAM lacked data for several proposed indicators.

Conclusions:

  • Mexico's early breast cancer detection program faces significant performance challenges.
  • There is a critical need for efficient health information systems to monitor screening programs effectively.
  • Establishing performance observatories is vital for continuous program improvement.
