Abnormal Proliferation02:23

Abnormal Proliferation

5.5K
Under normal conditions, most adult cells remain in a non-proliferative state unless stimulated by internal or external factors to replace lost cells. Abnormal cell proliferation is a condition in which the cell's growth exceeds and is uncoordinated with normal cells. In such situations, cell division persists in the same excessive manner even after cessation of the stimuli, leading to persistent tumors. The tumor arises from the damaged cells that replicate to pass the damage to the...

Skin Cancer01:30

Skin Cancer

6.7K
Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, accounting for about 80% of cases. It typically develops in...

Papillary Dermis01:11

Papillary Dermis

7.0K
Dermis
The dermis might be considered the "core" of the integumentary system, as distinct from the epidermis and hypodermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis is made of two layers of connective tissue that comprise an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagenous fibers, produced by fibroblasts.
Papillary Layer
The papillary layer is made of loose, areolar connective tissue, which means the collagen...

Extracellular Matrix01:26

Extracellular Matrix

6.8K
Unlike epithelial tissue, which is composed of cells closely packed with little or no extracellular space in between, connective tissue cells are dispersed in a matrix. This extracellular matrix (ECM) is composed of fibrous proteins like collagen, elastin, and fibronectin in a ground substance consisting of interstitial fluid, cell adhesion proteins, and proteoglycans. The proteoglycans form a gel-like material in the spaces between cells and provide hydration, buffering, binding, and force...

The Mitotic Spindle02:27

The Mitotic Spindle

8.5K
The mitotic spindle—or spindle apparatus—is a eukaryotic, cytoskeletal structure made up of long protein fibers called microtubules. Formed during cell division, the spindle separates sister chromatids and moves them to opposite ends of a parental cell, where the now individual chromosomes are distributed to two daughter cell nuclei.
The bipolar configuration of the mitotic spindle facilitates chromosomal segregation, preparing the cell for division. One mechanism that ensures...

Summary

This case report details a rare instance of an ovarian dermoid cyst penetrating the bladder, causing symptoms like abdominal pain and hair in urine (pilimiction). This unusual presentation highlights a rare complication of mature cystic teratomas.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Urology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Ovarian dermoid cysts (mature cystic teratomas) are common neoplasms, typically found in younger women and often asymptomatic.
  • They constitute 10-25% of ovarian neoplasms and are usually incidental findings.
  • Complications include torsion, rupture, infection, and malignant transformation.

Observation:

  • A rare case of a dermoid cyst in the urinary bladder is presented.
  • The patient experienced lower abdominal pain and pilimiction (hair in urine).
  • Investigations revealed a right-sided ovarian dermoid cyst that had penetrated the bladder wall.

Findings:

  • The ovarian dermoid cyst had eroded into the urinary bladder, expelling its contents.
  • This direct communication between the ovarian cyst and the bladder is an extremely rare finding.
  • The patient presented with a unique combination of gynecological and urological symptoms.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the potential for unusual presentations and complications of ovarian dermoid cysts.
  • Highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in cases with atypical symptoms.
  • This presentation has not been previously reported in Pakistani medical literature, adding to its rarity.
