Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Rheumatology
  • Vascular Surgery

Background:

  • Popliteal cysts are common intra-articular Baker's cysts.
  • Complications include rupture, dissection, and pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome.
  • Neuropathic arthropathy involves joint destruction due to sensory neuropathy.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with symptoms mimicking deep vein thrombosis.
  • The patient had a history of neuropathic arthropathy of the knee.
  • Imaging revealed a dissecting popliteal cyst as the underlying cause.

Findings:

  • The patient was diagnosed with pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome secondary to a dissecting popliteal cyst.
  • This case demonstrates an unusual association between neuropathic arthropathy and popliteal cyst complications.
  • The syndrome presented as a form of arthritis in this context.

Implications:

  • Dissecting popliteal cysts should be considered in patients with neuropathic arthropathy and pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome.
  • Early diagnosis and management of popliteal cyst complications are crucial.
  • This finding expands the spectrum of arthritis presentations associated with popliteal cysts.
