Summary

Routine drains are not necessary after laparoscopic cholecystectomy for uncomplicated gallbladders. This study found no link between drain use and postoperative fluid collection, suggesting drains do not prevent fluid buildup.

  • Drains were used in 20.4% of patients; 26.8% had postoperative fluid collection.
  • No significant association was found between drain use and the presence or volume of fluid collection (P>0.05).
  • Age, gender, and prior cholecystitis attacks did not influence fluid collection.

Conclusions:

  • Drain placement after laparoscopic cholecystectomy does not correlate with reduced postoperative fluid collection.
  • Routine drain use is not indicated in uncomplicated cases to prevent fluid accumulation.
