Summary

Delayed diagnosis of partial Achilles tendon rupture occurred due to non-specific symptoms and normal MRI. Surgical repair was successful, with an uneventful recovery period.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Sports Medicine
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Partial Achilles tendon ruptures can present with subtle symptoms, mimicking other musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Diagnostic challenges arise from non-specific clinical presentations and seemingly normal imaging findings.

Observation:

  • A case report details a patient with a partial Achilles tendon rupture initially misdiagnosed due to vague symptoms.
  • Diagnostic delay of nearly four months was attributed to unspecific symptoms and near-normal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) results.
  • Clinical examination did not reveal clear signs indicative of a complete tendon rupture.

Findings:

  • Open surgery confirmed a partial Achilles tendon rupture.
  • The rupture showed no significant signs of tendinopathy.

  • Successful surgical suturing of the tendon was performed.
  • Implications:

    • Highlights the importance of considering partial Achilles tendon ruptures even with non-specific symptoms and normal MRI.
    • Emphasizes the need for thorough clinical evaluation and potentially advanced imaging in persistent cases.
    • Underscores that timely surgical intervention can lead to favorable patient outcomes.
