Summary

Asbestos exposure, even brief, can cause malignant mesothelioma (MM) years later. Two DIY renovation cases highlight the risks of disturbing asbestos-containing materials.

Background:

  • Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is exclusively caused by asbestos fiber exposure.
  • The latency period for MM development is typically 20-50 years post-exposure.
  • Even low-level and brief asbestos exposures can significantly increase MM risk.

Observation:

  • Two cases of malignant mesothelioma are presented.
  • Both patients had asbestos exposure during do-it-yourself (DIY) roof renovation activities.
  • Exposure involved cutting and drilling asbestos-containing roof sheeting.
  • No significant occupational asbestos exposure was identified in their histories.

Findings:

  • DIY activities involving asbestos materials pose a risk for developing malignant mesothelioma.
