    Summary

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Endocrinology
    • Neurology

    Background:

    • Corticosteroid therapy is widely used for various medical conditions.
    • Psychiatric complications associated with corticosteroid use are often underrecognized.
    • The incidence and severity of these psychiatric disorders may be dose-dependent.

    Observation:

    • The authors present two cases of multiple sclerosis patients who developed steroid-induced psychosis.
    • These psychiatric manifestations are more frequent than commonly perceived.
    • A correlation between corticosteroid dosage and the occurrence of psychiatric disorders is suggested.

    Findings:

    • A novel four-group classification system for steroid-induced psychiatric disorders is proposed for clinical utility.
    • Etiological mechanisms underlying these psychiatric complications are reviewed.
    • Treatment approaches for managing steroid-induced psychiatric disorders are outlined.

    Implications:

    • This work highlights the importance of monitoring for psychiatric side effects during corticosteroid treatment.
    • The proposed classification may aid clinicians in diagnosing and managing these conditions.
    • Understanding the etiology and treatment is crucial for improving patient outcomes in steroid-treated populations.
