Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

9.9K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Association Areas of the Cortex

10.8K
Association areas are regions of the cerebral cortex that do not have a specific sensory or motor function. Instead, they integrate and interpret information from various sources to enable higher cognitive processes such as memory, learning, and decision-making. Some key association areas include the following:
Prefrontal Association Area: This area is located in the frontal lobe and is involved in planning, decision-making, and moderating social behavior. It connects with primary motor areas,...

Prosopagnosia01:24

Prosopagnosia

1.2K
Prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, is the inability to recognize faces. In severe cases, individuals with prosopagnosia may not recognize close family members, including parents and spouses, by their faces. For instance, someone with prosopagnosia might walk past their child in a crowd, only realizing their mistake upon noticing their child's distinctive backpack or favorite jacket. Prosopagnosia specifically impairs facial recognition, while the recognition of other objects or...

    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

This study introduces a novel face presentation attack detection (PAD) method using light field cameras (LFCs). LFCs capture focus variations to effectively identify sophisticated spoof attacks, outperforming existing PAD techniques.

    Area of Science:

    • Computer Vision
    • Biometrics
    • Security Systems

    Background:

    • Face recognition systems are increasingly vulnerable to sophisticated presentation attacks (spoof attacks).
    • Existing face presentation attack detection (PAD) schemes lack a universally superior method due to evolving attack sophistication.
    • There is a critical need for advanced PAD techniques to enhance biometric security.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To introduce a novel perspective for face presentation attack detection (PAD) using light field camera (LFC) technology.
    • To explore the potential of focus variations captured by LFCs for distinguishing genuine faces from spoof attacks.
    • To develop and evaluate a new PAD scheme based on LFC-rendered depth images.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized a light field camera (LFC) to capture multi-depth images of faces in a single shot.
    • Developed a novel PAD approach by analyzing the variation of focus across multiple depth images rendered by the LFC.
    • Created a new face artefact database using LFC, comprising 80 subjects and simulating photo print and electronic screen attacks.

    Main Results:

    • The proposed PAD scheme demonstrated outstanding performance in detecting presentation attacks.
    • Experiments on the light field face artefact database showed superior efficacy compared to established state-of-the-art PAD schemes.
    • The analysis of focus variations proved effective in revealing sophisticated spoofing attempts.

    Conclusions:

    • Light field cameras offer a unique and effective approach for face presentation attack detection.
    • Analyzing focus variations from LFC-rendered images is a promising method for enhancing biometric security against spoofing.
    • The proposed LFC-based PAD scheme represents a significant advancement in combating sophisticated face presentation attacks.
