[Causes of early failure after total hip arthroplasty]

Objective:
To explore the causes of early failure after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA).
Methods:
The causes of early THA failures were retrospectively reviewed for 215 cases of revision THA between January 2007 and December 2013.
Results:
The causes of early failures of primary THA in decreasing frequencies were infection (50.7%, 109/215), aseptic loosening (31.6%, 68/215), dislocation (8.8%, 19/215), periprosthetic fracture (3.7%, 8/215), implant-related failure (2.3%, 5/215), heterotopic ossification (1.4%, 3/215) and liner wear (0.9%, 2/215).
Conclusion:
The top three causes of early failure after primary THA are infection, aseptic loosening and dislocation.
