  • To assess patient satisfaction and perceived speech improvement following interventions for velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD).
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of surgical and speech therapy treatments for VPD from the patient's perspective.

Main Methods:

  • A self-assessment questionnaire was administered to 114 Swedish patients diagnosed with various forms of VPD.
  • Participants, aged 7-71, had undergone videofluoroscopy and, in many cases, VPD surgery and/or speech therapy.
  • The questionnaire gathered data on speech satisfaction, perceived quality, and treatment-related improvements.

Main Results:

  • 71% of patients perceived their speech as normal or slightly deviant, yet only 55% expressed satisfaction.
  • 60% of surgically treated patients reported significant speech improvement, compared to 41% of those receiving speech therapy.
