This study developed a culturally sensitive health intervention for older Hispanic adults living alone, using the Ecological Validity Model (EVM) for cultural relevance. The intervention addresses eight EVM dimensions, enhancing health promotion for diverse ethnic groups.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Public Health
- Health Promotion
Background:
- Older Hispanic adults living alone face unique health challenges.
- Culturally sensitive interventions are crucial for effective health promotion in minority aging populations.
- Existing health interventions may lack cultural relevance for specific ethnic groups.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a culturally sensitive, occupation-based health promotion intervention.
- To tailor the intervention for older Hispanic adults living alone.
- To utilize the Ecological Validity Model (EVM) for cultural adaptation.
Main Methods:
- A mixed-methods design was employed for content validation.
- The Ecological Validity Model (EVM) guided cultural adaptation.
- Quantitative (content validity ratio) and qualitative (focus groups, directed content analysis) methods were used.
Main Results:
- A working version of the intervention protocol was created.
- The intervention successfully incorporated the eight dimensions of the EVM.
- Content validity was established through expert and community input.
Conclusions:
- The EVM is effective for culturally centering preventive interventions for ethnic minorities.
- This approach can enhance the external validity and cultural competence of health programs.
- Future research should focus on the feasibility and implementation of the developed intervention.
