Summary

Two cases of sirenomelia, a rare congenital defect, were observed in Colombia. Environmental factors, specifically landfill leachate exposure, are suggested as a potential cause for this condition.

Background:

  • Sirenomelia (mermaid syndrome) is a rare congenital anomaly with a prevalence of 1:100,000 births.
  • Previous studies have suggested environmental factors contributing to sirenomelia in Cali, Colombia.

Observation:

  • Two unrelated cases of sirenomelia occurred in Cali, Colombia.
  • Both affected mothers shared adverse sociodemographic factors, including poverty and poor nutrition.
  • Exposure to river water and fish contaminated with landfill leachate was common to both cases.

Findings:

  • The study suggests a common etiological factor of environmental origin for the two sirenomelia cases.
  • Exposure to landfill leachate derivatives is proposed as a potential contributing factor to sirenomelia.

Implications:

  • This research highlights the potential link between environmental pollution from landfills and rare congenital defects.
  • Further investigation into landfill leachate as an etiological factor for sirenomelia is warranted.
  • Public health initiatives should address environmental contamination in impoverished areas to prevent birth defects.
