The Mammary Glands

3.1K
The female breast is a hemispheric projection of variable size positioned anterior to the pectoralis major and serratus anterior muscles. A fascia layer composed of dense, irregular connective tissue connects it to these muscles.
Each breast features a pigmented projection known as the nipple, through which milk emerges via closely spaced openings of ducts, referred to as lactiferous ducts. Surrounding the nipple is a circular pigmented area of skin named the areola, which appears rough due to...

Summary

This review covers rare mesenchymal breast lesions, detailing their imaging, presentation, and diagnosis. Awareness is crucial for radiologists due to potential malignancy and overlapping features with other breast cancers.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Mesenchymal breast lesions are a diverse group of diseases.
  • Many are rare, with limited case reports available.
  • Accurate diagnosis is essential due to potential malignant behavior.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review imaging findings of selected mesenchymal breast lesions.
  • To discuss their clinical presentations.
  • To outline diagnostic methods for these rare conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of mesenchymal breast lesions.
  • Analysis of imaging characteristics.
  • Correlation with clinical presentation and diagnosis.

Main Results:

  • Mesenchymal lesions include haemangioma, granular cell tumour, myofibroblastoma, fibromatosis, pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia, and malignant fibrous histiocytoma.
  • Imaging features can overlap with malignant breast lesions.
  • Radiologists must recognize these diverse entities.

Conclusions:

  • Radiologists need awareness of mesenchymal breast lesions.
  • Understanding imaging findings aids in diagnosis.
  • Distinguishing benign from malignant mesenchymal lesions is critical.
