The bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) rs17563 polymorphism shows varied associations with nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without palate (NSCL/P) risk across different ethnicities. While not significant overall, it increases risk in Chinese populations and offers protection in Brazilians.
