Area of Science:

  • Forensic Toxicology
  • Trauma Research
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Substance use is a significant factor in trauma cases.
  • Understanding drug and alcohol prevalence in trauma victims is crucial for effective intervention and prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and characteristics of drug and alcohol use in fatally and nonfatally injured trauma patients.
  • To identify demographic and injury-related factors associated with substance use in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of urine specimens from 452 emergency room (ER) patients and 160 Medical Examiner's Office (MEO) autopsies.
  • Testing for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, and benzodiazepines using EMIT enzyme immunoassays.
  • Measurement of blood alcohol levels.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Substance use was detected in 40.3% of ER samples and 18.7% of MEO samples.
  • Marijuana was the most commonly detected drug in both groups.
  • Positive drug tests were more frequent in younger individuals, males, and victims of assaults and traffic accidents. Alcohol was present in over one-third of samples.

Conclusions:

  • A substantial proportion of trauma victims exhibit evidence of drug and/or alcohol use.
  • Substance use patterns vary by demographics and mechanism of injury.
  • These findings underscore the importance of screening for substance use in trauma care.
