Summary

High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is superior to chest X-ray for detecting early lung involvement in systemic sclerosis (SS) patients. This imaging method aids in identifying patients for timely therapeutic intervention to manage pulmonary complications.

  • HRCT detected lung abnormalities in 20 out of 25 patients, significantly more than chest X-ray (7/20).
  • Ground glass opacities (GGO) were the most common HRCT finding (9/20).
  • HRCT findings beyond GGO were more strongly associated with symptomatic respiratory involvement.

Conclusions:

  • HRCT is more sensitive than chest X-ray for early detection of pulmonary involvement in SS.
  • HRCT is crucial for identifying SS patients who may benefit from early therapeutic interventions.
  • Early detection and treatment can potentially limit or reverse lung damage in SS.
