Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Computational Biology

Background:

  • Accurate assessment of body surface area is crucial for determining psoriasis severity.
  • Current methods for evaluating psoriatic area lack objectivity, reliability, and practicality.
  • A need exists for an improved, objective method to quantify psoriatic lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the utility of computer image analysis (CIA) using Image J freeware for objective assessment of psoriatic area.
  • To compare CIA with physician-based estimation (E-method) and manual assessment (M-method).

Main Methods:

  • Fifteen psoriasis patients were enrolled in a clinical trial with adalimumab or placebo.
  • Psoriatic area was assessed using physician estimation (E-method) and CIA (T-method and M-method).
  • Image J freeware was utilized for semi-automatic (T-method) and manual (M-method) CIA.

Main Results:

  • Both T-method and E-method showed strong correlation with the M-method (gold standard).
  • The T-method exhibited a slightly stronger correlation with the M-method compared to the E-method.
  • All methods detected changes in psoriatic area post-treatment, though E-method tended to overestimate.

Conclusions:

  • Computer image analysis (CIA) with Image J freeware provides a reliable and practical approach for quantitative assessment of psoriatic lesions.
  • CIA offers an objective alternative for evaluating psoriasis severity and treatment response.
