Background:

  • Luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion is pulsatile and regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis.
  • Benzodiazepines, like clobazam, are known to affect the central nervous system, but their impact on reproductive hormones requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of clobazam on the pulsatile secretion of LH in healthy adult males.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, cross-over study design was employed.
  • Six healthy male volunteers received either 40 mg of clobazam or a placebo orally.
  • LH pulsatile secretion was monitored over 8-hour periods.

Main Results:

  • Clobazam administration significantly increased LH pulse frequency compared to placebo (mean 5 pulses/8 h vs. 3.8 pulses/8 h, P < 0.05).
