Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of oocyte donation using gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT).
  • To assess pregnancy outcomes in relation to recipient age and donor characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) was performed in 61 women undergoing oocyte donation.
  • Donors had a mean age of 32 years; 34 recipients were amenorrhoeic.

Main Results:

  • Seventy-five cycles resulted in 29 clinical pregnancies (21 term, 3 ongoing, 5 lost).
  • 38% of pregnant women were over 42 years old.
  • Multiple pregnancies and pre-eclamptic toxaemia were observed, particularly with >4 oocytes transferred.

Conclusions:

  • Oocyte donation from young women provides high fertility potential, independent of recipient age.
  • GIFT is an effective method for achieving pregnancy in older women through oocyte donation.
