    Summary

This study found no adverse interactions between the contrast agent iotrolan and chymopapain during chemonucleolysis in canine spinal discs. Neuroradiologic imaging confirmed chymopapain

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroradiology
    • Biomedical Imaging
    • Spinal Intervention

    Background:

    • Chemonucleolysis is a minimally invasive procedure for treating herniated discs.
    • Iotrolan is a nonionic dimeric contrast medium used in medical imaging.
    • Potential interactions between contrast agents and therapeutic substances require investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate potential neuroradiologic interactions between iotrolan and chymopapain.
    • To assess the safety of using iotrolan for diskography prior to chymopapain-induced chemonucleolysis.
    • To determine if iotrolan affects the efficacy of chymopapain.

    Main Methods:

    • Animal model using canine lumbar intervertebral discs.
    • Diskography with iotrolan (300 mg I/ml) followed by chymopapain nucleolysis.
    • Control groups: nucleolysis alone and diskography alone.
    • Neuroradiologic assessment using conventional radiography, CT, and MRI.

    Main Results:

    • Typical neuroradiologic signs of chymopapain's effect were observed in all treated discs.
    • No adverse interactions were detected between iotrolan and chymopapain.
    • Neuroradiologic findings were consistent regardless of prior diskography with iotrolan.

    Conclusions:

    • The dimeric, nonionic contrast medium iotrolan does not interact adversely with chymopapain.
    • Iotrolan can be safely used for diskography before chemonucleolysis.
    • These findings support the combined use of iotrolan and chymopapain in clinical settings.
