Hepatitis C virus (HCV) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing is crucial for identifying chronic infections. However, this pilot study found suboptimal PCR testing and follow-up in general practice, hindering timely diagnosis and treatment.

Background:

  • General practitioners (GPs) managing newly antibody-positive hepatitis C patients were invited to participate.
  • A self-administered survey was used to collect data on the use of hepatitis C PCR testing in their patients.
  • Data collection occurred between August 1, 2007, and August 1, 2012.

  • Nearly half (46%) of patients did not receive any hepatitis C PCR testing.
  • Among those tested, 58% were positive via PCR.
  • Only 55% of PCR-positive patients were retested at the 6-month mark for chronic infection confirmation.

Conclusions:

  • Effective use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing is essential for diagnosing chronic hepatitis C.
  • Improved adherence to recommended PCR testing protocols is needed for timely patient referral and treatment.
