Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the macronutrient and energy content of breast milk between lactating women with a history of bariatric surgery and non-surgical controls.
  • To investigate potential correlations between maternal dietary intake and breast milk composition post-bariatric surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of breast milk samples from 12 women post-bariatric surgery and 36 non-surgical controls using the Human Milk Analyzer.
  • Assessment of maternal dietary intake via 24-hour food records prior to sample collection.

Main Results:

  • Breast milk from the bariatric surgery group exhibited significantly higher fat content (3.0 vs. 2.2 g/100 ml, P=0.008) and energy content (61.0 vs. 51.7 kcal/100 ml, P=0.002).
  • A slightly higher carbohydrate content was observed in the surgical group (6.6 vs. 6.3 g/100 ml, P=0.045).
  • No significant correlations were found between maternal diet and breast milk macronutrient composition in either group.

Conclusions:

  • Breast milk produced by women following bariatric surgery demonstrates at least equivalent, and potentially higher, nutritional value compared to non-surgical controls.
  • Maternal dietary intake does not strongly explain the observed variations in breast milk composition after bariatric surgery.
