Infraslow brain activity (<0.1 Hz) is present in postanoxic coma patients and influences EEG power. This infraslow activity modulates cortical excitability, especially in severe cases with burst-suppression.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Clinical Electrophysiology
Background:
- Infraslow brain activity (<0.1 Hz) plays a role in brain function.
- Its presence and impact in postanoxic coma are not fully understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate infraslow activity in postanoxic coma patients.
- To explore the relationship between infraslow activity and conventional EEG power (3-30 Hz).
Main Methods:
- Continuous full-band scalp EEG was recorded in 41 postanoxic coma patients.
- Infraslow activity (0.015-0.06 Hz) and its modulation of higher frequencies were analyzed.
- A computational model simulated burst-suppression patterns.
Main Results:
- Infraslow activity was detected in all patients, regardless of outcome or conventional EEG patterns.
- EEG power in the 3-30 Hz range correlated with infraslow activity phase in most patients.
- Burst-suppression patterns were phase-locked to infraslow oscillations in several patients.
Conclusions:
- Infraslow activity is preserved in postanoxic encephalopathy.
- It modulates cortical excitability, with the strongest effect seen in severe cases exhibiting burst-suppression.
