Magnetic Resonance Imaging01:24

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

10.5K
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical imaging technique based on a phenomenon of nuclear physics discovered in the 1930s, in which matter exposed to magnetic fields and radio waves was found to emit radio signals. In 1970, a physician and researcher named Raymond Damadian noticed that malignant (cancerous) tissue gave off different signals than normal body tissue. He applied for a patent for the first MRI scanning device in clinical use by the early 1980s. The early MRI...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System IV: CMRI

555
Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging, or CMRI, is a non-invasive diagnostic test that employs a magnetic field and radiofrequency waves to create precise images of the heart and arteries. It provides comprehensive information about cardiac anatomy, function, perfusion, and tissue characterization without ionizing radiation.IndicationsCMRI diagnoses various heart conditions, including tissue damage from heart attacks, ischemic heart disease, myocarditis, aortic issues (tears, aneurysms,...

DefinitionRenal angiography, also known as renal arteriography, is an imaging technique used to obtain a comprehensive view of blood flow and the vascular structure of blood vessels in the kidneys and surrounding areas.PurposeRenal angiography detects blood vessel abnormalities in the kidneys, such as aneurysms, stenosis, thrombosis, vascular tumors, and renal artery stenosis. It evaluates kidney function and guides interventional treatments like angioplasty or stent placement.Pre-Procedure...

Radiological Investigation II: MRI and Ventilation Perfusion Scan

941
Description
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ventilation Perfusion Scans are two radiological investigations that offer detailed diagnostic images of the body, particularly lung structures.
MRI
MRI uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals to distinguish between normal and abnormal tissues. This technology provides a more detailed diagnostic image than CT scans, enabling it to characterize pulmonary nodules, stage bronchogenic carcinoma, and evaluate inflammatory activity in...

Assessment of Diffusion and Perfusion01:17

Assessment of Diffusion and Perfusion

2.1K
Understanding and evaluating diffusion and perfusion is critical in assessing a patient's respiratory and circulatory health. These processes play key roles in maintaining the body's internal environment, ensuring that tissues receive adequate oxygen while waste products are efficiently removed.
The Role of Diffusion in Respiration
Diffusion is the process by which molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. In the respiratory system, this...

Arteries of the Head and Neck01:26

Arteries of the Head and Neck

4.7K
The human body's intricate network of arteries ensures that every organ system receives the necessary oxygen and nutrients for optimal function. The arterial network in the head and neck region is particularly complex, providing vital blood flow to the brain, eyes, and other critical structures. Prominent arteries in this region include the internal carotid arteries and the vertebral arteries.
The internal carotid arteries supply blood to the anterior portion of the cerebrum. They enter the...

    Summary

ARTSENS, a low-cost device, now accurately measures arterial stiffness (AS) and jugular venous pulse (JVP) even in supine positions. New methods improve AS measurement by distinguishing carotid artery pulses from jugular vein signals.

    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Cardiovascular Physiology
    • Medical Ultrasound

    Background:

    • Arterial stiffness (AS) measurement of the common carotid artery (CCA) is crucial for cardiovascular health assessment.
    • Existing automated ultrasound devices like ARTSENS face challenges in supine positions due to internal jugular vein (IJV) pulsation.
    • Jugular venous pulse (JVP) is a vital diagnostic indicator for right-sided heart conditions, yet noninvasive estimation methods are limited.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To enhance the ARTSENS device for accurate AS measurement in supine positions.
    • To develop methods for differentiating common carotid artery pulse (CCP) from jugular venous pulse (JVP).
    • To enable noninvasive JVP analysis using the improved ARTSENS system.

    Main Methods:

    • Integration of an ECG device with the ARTSENS hardware to segregate CCP and JVP signals based on physiological principles.
    • Development of a secondary classification method for CCP and JVP separation without ECG, accepting slightly higher error rates.
    • Utilizing A-mode ultrasound frames from the CCA for AS and JVP analysis.

    Main Results:

    • A novel method successfully segregates CCP and JVP, achieving a false identification rate below 4%.
    • An ECG-independent method was developed, offering a viable alternative with slightly increased error.
    • The enhanced ARTSENS device demonstrates capability for automatic AS measurement and JVP analysis in supine positions.

    Conclusions:

    • The improved ARTSENS device provides accurate AS measurements and enables JVP analysis, even in challenging supine positions.
    • The dual methods (ECG-dependent and independent) offer flexibility for clinical application.
    • ARTSENS is positioned as a unique, user-friendly tool for both arterial stiffness and jugular venous pulse assessment.
