Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

1.2K
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Spearman's Rank Correlation Test01:20

Spearman's Rank Correlation Test

1.7K
Spearman's rank correlation test, also known as Spearman's rho, is a nonparametric method for assessing the strength and direction of association between two variables. This test is particularly valuable when the data distribution is unknown or when the assumption of normality does not hold. Named after the English psychologist and statistician Dr. Charles Edward Spearman, it serves as the nonparametric counterpart to Pearson's correlation coefficient.

Multiple Comparison Tests01:13

Multiple Comparison Tests

4.7K
Multiple comparison test, abbreviated as MCT, is a post hoc analysis generally performed after comparing multiple samples with one or more tests. An MCT will help identify a significantly different sample among multiple samples or a factor among multiple factors.
It would be easy to compare two samples using a significance alpha level of 0.05. In other words, there is only one sample pair to be compared. However, it would be difficult to identify a significantly different sample if the number...

Measures of Intelligence01:29

Measures of Intelligence

10.5K
Psychologists measure intelligence by using standardized tests that produce a score known as the intelligence quotient or IQ. To understand IQ tests, it's important to recognize the key principles behind their construction: validity, reliability, and standardization.
Validity refers to how well a test measures what it claims to measure. An intelligence test should accurately assess intelligence rather than another characteristic, like anxiety. Criterion validity is one way to evaluate this;...

Comparing Experimental Results: Student's t-Test

6.9K
The t-test is a statistical method used to compare the sample mean with a population mean or compare two means from two data sets. The test statistic is calculated from the standard deviation, mean, and number of measurements in the data set at a selected confidence interval and then compared to a table of critical values at this confidence level. If the test statistic is smaller than the critical value, the null hypothesis is accepted. In this case, we state that the difference between the...

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

14.4K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Summary

This study compared two lie detection methods: the probable-lie and directed-lie comparison question tests (CQT). While both CQT variants showed guilt effects, the directed-lie CQT offers better standardization for deception detection.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Forensic Science

Background:

  • The Comparison Question Test (CQT) is a polygraph technique used for deception detection.
  • Two variants, the probable-lie CQT and the directed-lie CQT, exist with differing question structures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To contrast the deception detection validity of the probable-lie and directed-lie CQT variants.
  • To evaluate the impact of stimulation conditions on CQT performance.

Main Methods:

  • A mock crime experiment was conducted with 250 participants randomly assigned to a 2x2x2 factorial design (Guilt x Test Type x Stimulation).
  • Data were scored using both an experienced polygraph examiner and the Objective Scoring System Version 2 (OSS2) computer algorithm.
  • Spontaneous countermeasure attempts were recorded for each test type.

Main Results:

  • Substantial main effects of guilt were observed in both computer (OSS2) and human scoring, indicating overall effectiveness in differentiating guilty from innocent individuals.
  • No significant differences were found in the number of spontaneous countermeasure attempts between the probable-lie and directed-lie CQT variants.
  • Detection accuracy results for the probable-lie and directed-lie CQT variants were equivocal under experimental conditions.

Conclusions:

  • Both probable-lie and directed-lie CQT variants demonstrated significant effects related to guilt.
  • The directed-lie CQT variant is recommended due to its inherent standardization in administration and construction, despite equivocal accuracy results in this controlled study.
