Skin Cancer01:30

Skin Cancer

6.6K
Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.

Papillary Dermis

7.0K
Dermis
The dermis might be considered the "core" of the integumentary system, as distinct from the epidermis and hypodermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis is made of two layers of connective tissue that comprise an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagenous fibers, produced by fibroblasts.
Papillary Layer
The papillary layer is made of loose, areolar connective tissue, which means the collagen...

    Summary

Elastofibroma dorsi is a rare benign tumor. Surgical management under general anesthesia is recommended due to limited value of preoperative diagnostics and potential inadequacy of local anesthesia.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedics
    • Surgical Oncology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Elastofibroma is a rare, benign mesenchymal tumor.
    • Typically presents as a slow-growing mass on the posterior chest wall, often subscapular.
    • Etiopathogenesis and optimal management strategies remain incompletely understood, with limited data from small case series.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze patient characteristics, clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, surgical management, and outcomes of Elastofibroma Dorsi.
    • To compare institutional findings with existing medical literature.
    • To provide insights into the diagnosis and surgical treatment of this rare tumor.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 11 cases of Elastofibroma Dorsi treated between January 2003 and July 2014.

  • Inclusion of patient demographics, clinical signs, preoperative investigations, surgical procedures, and complications.
  • Histological examination for definitive diagnosis.
  • Main Results:

    • Preoperative investigations demonstrated limited diagnostic value for Elastofibroma Dorsi.
    • A presumptive diagnosis is feasible when clinical presentation is typical.
    • General anesthesia is preferred for surgical resection due to potential inadequacy of local anesthesia and sedation for patient comfort.

    Conclusions:

    • Elastofibroma Dorsi management requires careful consideration of diagnostic limitations.
    • Surgical intervention under general anesthesia is advised for optimal patient comfort and surgical outcomes.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the etiopathogenesis and refine management protocols for Elastofibroma Dorsi.
