Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

6.7K
Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Summary

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) and Ewing sarcoma (EWS) are rare in adult lungs. This case report details a 32-year-old male diagnosed with pulmonary Ewing sarcoma-PNETs presenting with chest pain and nodules.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) and Ewing sarcoma (EWS) are rare malignant small round cell neoplasms.
  • Pulmonary involvement of EWS-PNETs in adults is exceptionally uncommon.
  • These tumors typically originate in soft tissue or bone.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a rare case of adult pulmonary Ewing sarcoma-PNETs.
  • To highlight diagnostic challenges and clinical presentation of this rare entity.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a 32-year-old male.
  • Clinical presentation including chest pain and diffuse pulmonary nodules on chest X-ray.
  • Diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma-PNETs.

Main Results:

  • The patient presented with symptoms suggestive of pulmonary disease.
  • Imaging revealed diffuse pulmonary nodules.
  • Histopathological diagnosis confirmed Ewing sarcoma-PNETs.

Conclusions:

  • Pulmonary EWS-PNETs, though rare in adults, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of diffuse pulmonary nodules.
  • This case underscores the importance of comprehensive diagnostic evaluation for rare thoracic malignancies.
