Cognitive Enhancers: Cholinesterase Inhibitors and NMDA Receptor Antagonists

Cognitive enhancers, also known as "smart drugs," are substances used to enhance memory, mental alertness, and concentration. These can be natural or synthetic and improve cognition in conditions like Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative diseases. Some common examples include caffeine, amphetamines, methylphenidate, modafinil, arecoline, donepezil, vortioxetine, and piracetam. These enhancers work on the principle of synaptic plasticity and altered circuit function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the range of cognitive outcomes in children with and without CP following NE.
  • To assess the predictive accuracy of early developmental assessments for later cognitive function.
  • To document the utilization of school services and additional therapies in this population.

Main Methods:

  • School-aged survivors from a randomized controlled trial of whole-body hypothermia were evaluated.
  • Participants underwent neurological examinations and cognitive testing at 18-22 months (Bayley Scales) and 6-7 years (Wechsler scales, DNP).
