Impending change in legal drinking age for Western Australian (WA) school leavers.
Increased risk of alcohol-related harms during the post-secondary transition period.
Need for targeted interventions to support young adults.

Purpose of the Study:

Qualitatively explore alcohol-related experiences of WA school leavers during the 'Schoolies' period.
Generate insights for designing effective intervention strategies.
Understand diverse alcohol consumption patterns and motivations.

Main Methods:

Emailed introspection from 54 participants aged 18-21.
Inclusion of diverse experiences: excessive drinking, moderate drinking, and alcohol avoidance.
Qualitative data analysis using NVivo10 software.

Main Results:

Identified three key themes: perceived role of alcohol, rite-of-passage rituals, and avoidance strategies.
Highlighted the significance of alcohol in Schoolies celebrations.
Documented strategies employed by some leavers to mitigate alcohol-related risks.

Conclusions:

Students and parents are key targets for Schoolies alcohol harm reduction interventions.
Legislative changes (secondary supply, controlled purchase) recommended for WA.
Development of alternative activities for school leavers is suggested.
