Summary

Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) educators show greater knowledge and positive attitudes towards evidence-based prevention programs compared to 4-H Youth Development educators. Findings suggest promoting these programs, especially in 4-H.

Background:

Evidence-based programs (EBPs) are crucial for effective prevention.
Understanding educator knowledge and perceptions is key to EBP adoption.
Cooperative Extension offers diverse prevention programs.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes towards EBPs among Extension educators.
To compare these factors between Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) and 4-H Youth Development program areas.

Main Methods:

A multi-state survey of county Extension educators.
Analysis of differences in knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes based on program area.

Main Results:

FCS educators demonstrated significantly higher knowledge of EBPs than 4-H educators.
FCS educators reported more favorable perceptions and attitudes towards EBPs and pre-packaged programs.
Significant differences were observed across program areas.

Conclusions:

Cooperative Extension administrators should promote EBP adoption.
Targeted strategies may be needed to increase EBP use within the 4-H program area.
Addressing knowledge and perception gaps can enhance prevention program effectiveness.
