Background:

  • Myringosclerosis, characterized by sclerotic plaques on the tympanic membrane, is an irreversible consequence of pathological healing.
  • Antioxidant therapies are recognized for their potential in preventing such conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), lycopene, and grape seed extract (GSE) in preventing myringosclerosis.
  • To evaluate the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of these supplements in an experimental model.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-four Wistar rats underwent myringotomies and were divided into four groups: control (saline), CoQ10, lycopene, and GSE.
  • Supplements were administered orally starting on the day of surgery.
  • Otomicroscopic and histopathological examinations were conducted on day 14 to assess tympanic membrane lesions and sclerosis.

Main Results:

  • All three antioxidant groups (CoQ10, lycopene, GSE) demonstrated statistically significant reductions in the degree of tympanic membrane sclerosis compared to the control group (P<0.001).
  • Histopathological findings corroborated the otomicroscopic results, indicating a diminished sclerotic process.

Conclusions:

  • Systemic administration of CoQ10, lycopene, and GSE effectively decreased myringosclerotic plaque formation post-myringotomy in rats.
  • The antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of the tested supplements were comparable, highlighting their potential in managing tympanic membrane pathological healing.
