Fractures: Bone Repair

6.9K
Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...

Summary

Parallel plating offers an excellent fixation method for intercondylar humerus fractures, demonstrating mechanical stability for early mobilization. This technique yields comparable results to orthogonal plating, with a 100% union rate and low complication rates.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Traumatology
  • Biomechanics

Background:

  • Intercondylar humerus fractures are common in young adults, accounting for 30% of elbow fractures.
  • Treatment remains challenging despite advancements in internal fixation techniques.
  • Orthogonal plating provides adequate results, but parallel plating is suggested to offer superior mechanical stability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical and functional outcomes of intercondylar humerus fractures treated with parallel plating.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study conducted in a tertiary care hospital.
  • 23 patients with intercondylar humerus fractures were treated using parallel plating.
  • Patients were followed for one year, assessing union time, range of motion, MAYO score, DASH score, and complications.

Main Results:

  • High union rate (100%) with less than 19% complication rate.
  • Significant improvement in range of motion from 21.38±5.70 to 116.1±7.92 degrees.
  • Improved functional scores: MAYO score increased from 5.00±1.26 to 96.32±4.96, and DASH score decreased from 150±5.34 to 31.42±2.04.

Conclusions:

  • Parallel plating is an effective fixation method for intercondylar humerus fractures.
  • The functional and clinical outcomes are comparable to those achieved with orthogonal plating.
