Cardiac resynchronization therapy improves psycho-cognitive performance in patients with heart failure

- Neuropsychological tests, including the mini-mental state examination, DemTect, age-concentration test, and Beck depression inventory, were administered at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months post-implantation.

- CRT-D implantation led to significant improvements in DemTect scores (P = 0.007) and age-concentration test performance (P = 0.005) compared to ICD.
- Significant improvements were observed in mini-mental state examination scores (P = 0.043) and a reduction in depression symptoms (Beck depression inventory, P < 0.001) in the CRT-D group versus the ICD group.
Conclusions:
- This study provides the first evidence of psycho-cognitive benefits from CRT-D in CHF patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction.
- The observed improvements in cognitive function and mood with CRT-D, unlike ICD therapy, may be linked to enhanced cardiac function and hemodynamics.
