Adhesion01:14

Adhesion

45.6K
Adhesion occurs when one type of molecule is attracted to a different molecule. Water exhibits adhesive properties in the presence of polar surfaces, such as glass or cellulose in plants. For instance, when water is poured into a glass, the positively charged hydrogen molecules of water are more attracted to the negatively charged oxygen molecules in the silica than to the oxygen in neighboring water molecules.
Capillary action is a result of water’s adhesive tendencies. When a narrow...

Summary

Denture adhesives improve denture retention, stability, and chewing function. While generally safe, more long-term studies are needed to fully understand their biocompatibility and potential risks.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Prosthodontics
  • Biocompatibility Research

Background:

  • Denture adhesives have been researched for over 50 years.
  • Despite widespread use, their effectiveness and biocompatibility findings are controversial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review existing literature on denture adhesive effectiveness and biocompatibility.
  • To assess patient and dental professional attitudes towards denture adhesives.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search of Medline database (English peer-reviewed dental literature).
  • Included all available evidence up to March 2014.
  • Manual citation search to supplement electronic search.

Main Results:

  • 32 articles were fully reviewed.
  • 21 articles focused on efficacy (retention, stability, masticatory performance).
  • 6 articles evaluated biocompatibility, and 5 explored user attitudes.

Conclusions:

  • Clinical studies indicate denture adhesives enhance prosthesis retention, stability, and masticatory performance.
  • Long-term in vivo studies on potential harmful effects are lacking.
  • Patient satisfaction is high when denture adhesives meet their needs.
