Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Physiology
  • Medical Research

Background:

  • Tissue microcirculation impairment is known in septic shock.
  • Limited data exists on microcirculation changes during anesthesia induction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate tissue microcirculation during anesthesia induction.
  • To investigate the relationship between peripheral vasodilation and microcirculation.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational study of 50 adult cardiac surgery patients.
  • Measured tissue oxygen saturation, vascular occlusion test, cerebral oximetry, and temperature gradients.
  • Analyzed hemodynamic data and forearm-minus-fingertip skin temperature gradients.

Main Results:

  • Vascular occlusion test recovery slope and cerebral oxygen saturation increased significantly.
  • Forearm-minus-fingertip skin temperature gradients decreased, indicating peripheral vasodilation.
  • An inverse correlation was found between temperature gradients and cerebral oximetry.

Conclusions:

  • Anesthesia induction appears to enhance tissue microcirculation.
  • Peripheral vasodilation during anesthesia induction is associated with improved microcirculation.
  • Further research is needed to fully understand these effects.
